Chapter 01Health & Wellness

What is sleep apnea?

A condition where your airway repeatedly collapses during sleep, briefly cutting off breathing — sometimes dozens of times an hour without you knowing. Hallmarks: loud snoring, daytime exhaustion despite full nights, morning headaches, a partner who reports you stop breathing.

Follow-up questions

How is it diagnosed?

An overnight sleep study (in-lab or a home kit). Watches can hint at it but can't diagnose.

Do I need a CPAP forever?

Often, but weight loss, side-sleeping, and surgery for some anatomy can reduce or eliminate the need.

Is snoring always apnea?

No — most snorers don't have apnea. But snoring plus daytime sleepiness or witnessed pauses warrants a study.
