Chapter 08Home & Car

How do I fix a leaky tap?

Turn off the water at the isolator valves under the sink (or the main if there's none). Plug the drain. Pop the decorative cap, unscrew the handle, lift out the cartridge or washer, and take it to a hardware shop to match. Reassemble in reverse. A 90% chance of success on your first try, a few euros in parts.

Follow-up questions

How do I tell if it's the washer or the cartridge?

Older two-handle taps: usually washers. Modern single-lever or ceramic-disc taps: cartridges. If unsure, photograph the inside and ask at the shop.

Why is my tap leaking at the base, not the spout?

Almost always the O-rings. Same disassembly, replace the rubber rings on the spout post.

When should I just call a plumber?

If shutting off the water doesn't stop the leak (the isolator may be faulty), if pipes corrode in your hand, or if the leak is inside the wall.
