Chapter 04 — Travel, Food & Lifestyle
How much should I tip?
US: 18–22% at sit-down restaurants, $1–2 per drink at bars, 15–20% for taxis. Most of Europe: round up or 5–10% if service was good. Japan and South Korea: don't tip, it can be awkward.
Follow-up questions
Do I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Pre-tax in the US, by convention. Nobody will judge you if you tip on the total.
Tipping for takeout?
Not expected, but 10% is a kind gesture for a complex order.
What about hotels?
US: $2–5/night for housekeeping (daily, in cash), $1–2 per bag for the porter, 15–20% for room service if not already added.
