Chapter 17Travel & Places

Should I arrive 3 hours early for a flight?

For international flights, yes — check-in cutoffs are strict and security queues in Europe and Asia can stretch past an hour. For domestic with only carry-on and PreCheck, 60–75 minutes is plenty. Miles-and-status travelers often push it tighter.

Follow-up questions

What's the earliest airlines will check you in?

Usually 3 hours before departure at the counter, 24 hours online. Some low-cost airlines charge for airport check-in.

What if I miss my flight?

Same-day standby is often free on the original airline. Miss the entire itinerary and 'no-show' rules can void the return leg.

Is Clear worth it on top of PreCheck?

In big US hubs (JFK, LAX, ATL) at peak times, yes. In quieter airports, PreCheck alone is enough.

How early for holidays?

Add 45–60 minutes over your usual buffer. Thanksgiving Wednesday and the Sunday after are the two worst days.
