Chapter 17Travel & Places

How do I avoid altitude sickness?

Ascend slowly — no more than 1,000 ft (300 m) of sleeping elevation gain per day above 8,000 ft. Hydrate, skip alcohol the first 48 hours, and consider Diamox (acetazolamide) starting one day before ascent for high trips like Cusco, Lhasa, or Everest Base Camp.

Follow-up questions

What are the symptoms?

Headache, nausea, poor sleep, and fatigue within 6–24 hours. Descend immediately if you experience confusion or shortness of breath at rest.

Does coca tea help?

Mild symptomatic relief in the Andes. Not a substitute for slow acclimatization.

Are altitude training masks useful?

No — they restrict airflow but don't simulate lower oxygen. Real acclimatization requires actual altitude.

Can I fly straight to La Paz or Cusco?

Yes but rest for 24–48 hours on arrival before hiking. Many people plan a slow first day intentionally.
