Chapter 07 — Work & Career
What should I do in my first 90 days at a new job?
Listen more than you talk. Map the org (who decides what, who's trusted, who's struggling), find a quick win that costs nothing politically, and meet every adjacent function. Don't propose big changes until you've earned the right to be heard — usually month 4 or 5.
Follow-up questions
How do I make a good first impression?
Be early, ship something small in the first 30 days, ask clarifying questions instead of assuming, and remember names.
What if I think I made a hiring mistake?
Give it 90 days minimum. Most new-job dread fades after the third month as competence catches up to scope.
How do I ask for feedback?
Specifically and often: 'In Tuesday's meeting, what would have made my contribution stronger?' beats 'How am I doing?'
