Up to 400 mg for most healthy adults — roughly four 8 oz coffees. Sensitivity is genetic, so some people feel jittery at 100 mg. Pregnant women should cap at 200 mg.

Follow-up questions

When should I stop drinking coffee?

Caffeine has a 5–6 hour half-life. A 2 p.m. cup still has a quarter of its dose in your system at bedtime.

Does decaf really have no caffeine?

It has about 2–15 mg per cup versus 80–100 mg in regular. Not zero, but negligible for most people.

Is energy drink caffeine different?

Same molecule, often paired with taurine and sugar. The crash comes from the sugar, not the caffeine.

Can you build tolerance?

Yes — within 1–2 weeks. A 3-day break resets most of it.
