Chapter 08 — Home & Car
How often should I replace smoke alarms?
Every 10 years — the sensors degrade even if the alarm chirps fine. Test monthly. Batteries in battery-only units annually. Combine smoke and CO alarms for full coverage.
Follow-up questions
Where should I put them?
One in every bedroom, one outside sleeping areas on each floor, and one in the basement. Not in the kitchen (nuisance alarms).
Hardwired or battery?
Hardwired with battery backup is best. Interconnect them so all go off together.
