Chapter 03 — Money & Finance
Do I have to file a tax return?
If you have income outside a single, fully-taxed payroll — freelance work, dividends, foreign income, rental — almost certainly yes. Even if not required, filing can refund overpaid tax.
Follow-up questions
What can I actually deduct?
Country-dependent, but commonly: home office, professional subscriptions, business travel, charitable donations, certain education costs.
When is the deadline?
April 15 in the US, January 31 (online) in the UK, late spring in most of the EU. Late filing penalties usually start the day after.
Do I need an accountant?
If your only income is a salary, no — free software handles it. Self-employment, rental, or multi-country income usually pay for the accountant in saved tax.
