Chapter 02Technology & Internet

What is AI, really?

Today's 'AI' is mostly large language models — statistical engines that predict the next token based on patterns in enormous text datasets. It's not thinking, but it's surprisingly useful for drafting, summarising and brainstorming.

Follow-up questions

Will AI take my job?

It will change tasks more than eliminate jobs. Roles heavy in repetitive writing, basic coding, and tier-1 support are most exposed.

Is AI safe to use at work?

Treat any prompt as a public Slack message. Don't paste secrets, customer data, or internal source code into consumer tools.

Why does AI hallucinate?

It optimises for plausible-sounding text, not truth. Without a retrieval source it will invent citations confidently.
