Chapter 13 — Legal & Rights
Can I be fired for any reason?
In most US states, yes — 'at will' means either side can end employment without cause. Exceptions: illegal reasons (race, religion, sex, retaliation for whistleblowing), contracts, or public policy violations. Montana is the outlier requiring cause after probation.
Follow-up questions
Firing for medical reasons?
ADA and FMLA protect employees for qualifying conditions and time off. Retaliation for using them is illegal.
Right-to-work vs at-will?
Different things. Right-to-work: unions can't require dues. At-will: no-cause termination. Both often coexist.
