Chapter 06Family & Parenting

How do I get my baby to sleep through the night?

Most babies can sleep 6+ hour stretches by around 4–6 months. A consistent wind-down routine, a dark cool room, and putting them down drowsy but awake (so they learn to fall asleep without being held) make the biggest difference. Newborns under 3 months wake to feed — that's biology, not a problem to fix.

Follow-up questions

Is sleep training cruel?

Reputable studies show no long-term harm from gradual or check-in methods done after 4 months. Pick a method you can apply consistently for two weeks.

Why does my baby wake at the same time every night?

Often a sleep cycle ending around a developmental shift, hunger, or environmental cue (heating clicking on, sunrise). A sound machine and blackout blinds help.

When do they drop the nap?

Most kids drop the morning nap around 12–18 months and the afternoon nap between 3 and 5. Cranky bedtime is the usual sign it's time.
