Chapter 05 — Love & Relationships
How can my partner and I communicate better?
Lead with how you feel, not what they did wrong ('I felt unimportant when…' beats 'You never…'). Listen to understand, not to reply. Schedule a weekly 20-minute check-in for the small stuff so it doesn't pile up into a fight. And separate 'we have a problem' from 'you are the problem'.
Follow-up questions
What's stonewalling?
Shutting down or going silent during conflict — one of the Gottman Institute's 'four horsemen' that predict divorce. The fix is a 20-minute break, then return to the conversation.
How do I bring up something hard?
Pick a calm moment, not the middle of a fight. State the topic, the feeling, and what you'd like — short, no preamble. 'Can we talk about money tonight?' beats ambushing them.
When should we try couples therapy?
Earlier than most people do. Average couple waits 6 years after problems start. Going when stuck — not broken — is more effective.
